Eagle and Wolf Symbolism

Having a Native American background, I tend to work with symbols from that perspective.  I currently am working on a spirit journey for my ranger character, Tyndariel, which is proving a bit more challenging than most as she is not exactly the most spiritual of characters except that she has developed this romanticized view on nature (growing up in the city) and forms as close of a bond as she is capable of forming with nature.

I’m curious about others views on what the animals I’ve chosen as her guides.  To me, the eagle is the material planes embodiment of the Thunder Bird.  I like that in the sense that as a bringer of rain, it links with waters cleansing and rebirth.  Being part of the air totem, the eagle also embodies communication and dreams, which is why I chose it as her initial guide.  The fact that it also embodies a masculine energy, freedom, skill, and power fits with the character.  The wolf I picked for its loyalty and strength as well as communication.  The fact that it has a lunar tie while the eagle has a solar tie felt well-balanced.

Tyndariel’s Spirit Journey

Working on fleshing out Tyndariel’s back story as it relates to her becoming a ranger.  She probably is the hardest character for me to write as she has very polar opposite views from my own.  I find this sort of funny and slightly scary in that Kasea is certifiable but somehow easier to write and give depth.  I’m not going to pause to think about what that says about me for very long, or I could become concerned.  :P   Tyndariel is actually based on one of my friends combined with elements from another friend.  Of course, she is operating in an environment that is totally different and has different motivators, but I find that sometimes it helps to have something to draw on in order to make sure that she comes across three-dimensional.  I’ll post part of her story soon in the excerpts section.  For Frontier Justice!

Sort of Strange

I don’t know if it is just me, but whenever I get close to finishing up a story it gets a bit harder.  I don’t know if it is because I’ve invested so much time into the characters and storyline that I am worried about losing something or some part of my self or because I am thinking ahead to the next stage and hoping people connect with my story in a way that is meaningful.  What do you guys think?

Defeat of Writer’s Block

There was a scene that I was having trouble figuring out what exactly I wanted to do with it and how to pull two story threads together.  It was bugging me for quite awhile, but I finally figured it out.  Well, perhaps it more just fell into place of its own accord as it actually ended up pulling some other threads in as well that laid the stage for future developments perfectly.  Sometimes I find, if you start writing, your subconscious seems to sort things out on its own and come up with more intricacies than you initially had planned on.  A really interesting dream sequence came out of my most recent effort.  The trick with writer’s block, it seems at least for me, is having enough courage to start the process when you don’t have the whole arc totally planned out.
